Reno, NV – In case you missed it, yesterday the Nevada Supreme Court poked a massive hole in the opponents of Question 6’s primary argument against the amendment. The Court, in a ruling upholding the question’s ballot language, stated that despite opponents’ claims, "the initiative here does not require an appropriation or expenditure of money by its plain language and does not require the State to pay for or provide abortions." 

This a crystal clear rebuttal to opponents’ shameless attempts to lie to Nevada voters about the impact of Question 6. In the state’s official guide to November’s ballot questions, opponents misleadingly claimed that the amendment will cause Nevadans to  “spend millions of dollars to fund abortions.”

“It is shameful that opponents are willing to blatantly lie to Nevada voters to defeat a ballot initiative that will give Nevadans what they deserve - the right to make their own private, personal healthcare decisions,” said Lindsey Harmon, president of Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom. “Nevadans overwhelmingly support keeping decisions about abortion between women, their loved ones, and their medical providers without the interference of politicians, and that is exactly what Question 6 will protect.”

Reno, NV – Today, Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom will begin airing a new statewide broadcast ad, “Been Different.” In the ad, Nevada couple Christine and Will share the difficult story of the pregnancy complication that put Christine’s life at risk, and the abortion she needed to save her life. 

“In too many states, patients like Christine are being denied the same access to life-saving healthcare. Voting yes on Question 6 will keep politicians out of our personal, private medical decisions, and leave those decisions to women, their families, and their doctors,” said Tova Yampolsky, Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom campaign manager.

In the ad, Angeles recalls her life-saving abortion and urges Nevadans to keep politicians out of private medical decisions

Reno, NV – Today, Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom will start airing its first broadcast TV ad in Spanish, titled “Angeles.” In the ad, Angeles reminds voters that rape and sexual violence are very real issues that can lead to unwanted pregnancies. She then recalls that at age 46, she had a second pregnancy she wanted “with her whole heart,” only for doctors to discover a tumor growing in her womb, and that an abortion was necessary to save her life.

Although Angles was able to receive the life-saving care she needed, millions of women living in states with extreme abortion bans are not afforded this same care. Bans in 22 states, including in neighboring Arizona, Utah, and Idaho, are threatening patients and putting women’s lives at risk. In Georgia, at least two women have died because the state’s extreme six-week abortion ban prevented them from receiving life-saving medical care. Question 6 aims to keep extreme bans out of Nevada by permanently protecting abortion rights in the Nevada Constitution.

New ad highlights the extreme abortion bans enacted since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, urges voters to permanently protect abortion rights in Nevada by voting Yes on Question 6

Reno, NV –  Today, Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom released a new TV ad, “Racing.” The ad highlights extreme abortion bans that have been enacted in 22 states since the overturning of Roe. v. Wade in 2022, putting women’s lives at risk across the country. In Georgia, at least two women have died because the state’s extreme six-week abortion ban prevented them from receiving life-saving medical care. 

The ad urges Nevadans to vote Yes on Question 6 to permanently protect abortion rights and keep extreme bans out of the state.

This is Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom’s first broadcast TV ad of the election. The ad will also run on connected TV and digital streaming platforms.

Anti-abortion extremists intentionally circulating false claim to mislead and scare voters in an attempt to defeat Question 6

Reno, NV –  PolitiFact has deemed a key anti-abortion talking point about the impact of Question 6, the amendment to permanently protect abortion rights in Nevada, as False. The amendment’s opposition has been spreading the false claim that there will be “no limits” on abortion access, including in the ballot question voter guide circulated by the office of the Secretary of State, in an attempt to scare and mislead voters. This claim is untrue. 

PolitiFact: Sam Brown’s mistaken claim that a proposed Nevada amendment would put ‘no limit’ on abortion access

• Republican Nevada Senate candidate Sam Brown recently expressed disapproval of a Nevada ballot measure to enact constitutional protections for abortion. Brown said the ballot measure would put "essentially no limit on access to abortion."

• Gretchen Ely, a University of Tennessee, Knoxville social work professor who studies abortion access, said Brown’s statement that the amendment places "no limit" on abortion access is wrong.

• The amendment "does actually put limitations on abortion in a similar way to what the current law does," she said. "The limit is up to viability … unless there’s a medical reason for needing one after that point in time." 

• Abortions after 24 weeks’ gestation are almost all the result of medical problems that endanger the fetus or the pregnant woman, [David] Orentlicher and Ely said. "This person's experiencing some kind of an unexpected medical situation that either puts their life at risk or their health at risk, or they know for some reason that the fetus won't develop into a viable infant," Ely said.

• El candidato republicano al Senado por Nevada, Sam Brown, expresó recientemente su desaprobación a la iniciativa incluida en la boleta electoral para promulgar protecciones constitucionales al aborto. Brown dijo que esta medida no permitiría ”prácticamente ningún límite al acceso al aborto¨.

• Gretchen Ely, profesora de trabajo social de la Universidad de Tennessee en Knoxville, que estudia el acceso al aborto, dijo que el posicionamiento de Brown sobre que la enmienda ¨no permite límites¨ para tener acceso a la interrupción del embarazo es errónea.

Effort aimed at educating voters on candidate’s position on Question 6, the amendment to permanently protect abortion rights

Reno, NV –  Today, Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom, the coalition behind the Yes on Question 6 campaign to permanently protect abortion rights in the Nevada Constitution, released a voter guide with Nevada candidates’ positions on the amendment. 

As part of Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom’s voter education efforts, the campaign sent a survey asking for candidates’ positions on the amendment to every Nevada candidate who will appear on the 2024 ballot.

“When it comes to something as important to voters as protecting abortion rights, too many politicians want to have it both ways,” said Tova Yampolsky, campaign manager with Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom. “Voters deserve to know where their candidates stand on Question 6. This ballot guide makes it perfectly clear who supports keeping politicians out of our private medical decisions, and who doesn’t.”

Reno, NV –  Today, Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom advocates joined 1990 Campaign for Choice chair Maggie Tracey to reflect on the decades-long fight to protect abortion and reproductive freedom in Nevada, and make clear the urgency to vote yes on Question 6 this fall. 

Maggie Tracey, who chaired the 1990 Campaign for Choice to pass statutory protections for abortion rights in Nevada, reflected on how despite the successes of the 1990 campaign, the fight for abortion rights and reproductive freedom is even more urgent today:

“Nevadans today value their freedom. They value their communities and their families, just as they did in 1990. Yet today that freedom is again threatened. Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade two years ago, abortion is now out of reach and illegal for millions of women… It is outrageous and terrifying that what we fought for over 30 years ago, the fight for the freedom to make our own healthcare decisions, to keep the government out of our “bedrooms” and our private lives – is the same fight we are fighting today.”

For Dr. Helen Trop-Zell, a Nevada internal medicine doctor who shared her own abortion story, and reflected on how the extreme bans on abortion across the country have profoundly impacted the ability of doctors to provide care: 

“I was fortunate to have had a supportive family and the ability to end my pregnancy, but that was a journey that no girl nor woman should ever have endured. I went on to college and medical school. I have practiced Internal Medicine for 40 years. Extreme abortion bans that we see in our neighboring states interfere with my freedom to treat patients. I took an oath to provide the best care for my patients. I cannot tell pregnant patients they do not have options. I cannot deny life-saving medical care for pregnant patients experiencing complications that threaten their lives and their pregnancies,” she shared. 

Asma Baloch, President of Planned Parenthood Generation Action at the University of Nevada, Reno, shared what’s at stake this election for young voters in Nevada: 

“I have met so many fellow students who chose to come to UNR because Nevada is a safe place to seek abortion and reproductive health care… As students, we have a responsibility not only to ourselves but also to our community and future generations to vote during this election. I want to remind you all that our voices matter and by voting on Yes on Question 6 we can create a future that prioritizes our reproductive freedom and our ability to thrive.”

Vivian Leal, a Washoe County activist who has been advocating for the passage of Question 6,  detailed the threats to abortion rights nationally and in surrounding states, and why Nevadans need to proactively protect their rights in the face of these attacks: 

“When people tell you that this protection is ‘not needed,’ look at history. Even recent history. Abortion bans are in place in two dozen states. Look at the fate of our sisters in our neighboring states of Arizona and Utah, where today they deny women care, with tragic, dangerous consequences. They are destroying lives. We will not allow that here.”

Reno, NV – Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom has received notice from the Secretary of State that the Reproductive Rights Amendment will be designated as Question 6 on the 2024 ballot. The amendment officially qualified for the ballot on June 28th after Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom submitted more that 200,000 signatures in support of the measure, almost double the amount needed. 

“Today, our campaign reached a historic milestone,” said Lindsey Harmon, president of Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom. “This fall, Nevadans will have the opportunity to make their voices heard and vote yes on Question 6 to permanently protect abortion rights in the Nevada Constitution and keep politicians out of our private medical decisions, once and for all.”

Twenty-two states now have abortion bans in place. Last month, Iowa became the most recent state to enact an extreme abortion ban, banning abortions after six weeks, before many women know they are pregnant.

Enmienda a la constitución para proteger los derechos reproductivos será la Pregunta 6 en la boleta electoral

Reno, NV – Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom recibió la notificación oficial del Secretario de Estado de que la enmienda a la constitución para proteger los derechos reproductivos de los Nevadenses será designada como la Pregunta 6 en la boleta electoral de 2024.

La enmienda calificó oficialmente el 28 de junio de 2024, para ser incluida en las boleta electoral al recabar más de 200 mil firmas de personas a favor  de la medida, casi el doble del número requerido.

“Hoy, nuestra campaña alcanzó un momento histórico”, dijo Lindsey Harmon, presidenta de Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom. “Este otoño, los nevadenses tendrán la oportunidad de que su voz se escuche y votar “Sí” por la Pregunta 6 para que los derechos al aborto estén protegidos de manera permanente en la Constitución de Nevada y dejar fuera a los políticos de nuestras decisiones médicas personales, de una vez por todas”.

Actualmente, 22 estados tiene prohibiciones al aborto. Endorsement represents the first time that the labor organization representing 150,000 workers has taken a formal position on abortion

Las Vegas, NV – Today, the Nevada AFL-CIO, the umbrella organization for Nevada labor unions, formally endorsed the abortion rights amendment to permanently protect abortion rights in the Nevada Constitution. The Nevada AFL-CIO represents 150,000 Nevada workers across 120 labor unions. This endorsement is the first time that the Nevada AFL-CIO has taken a position on the issue of abortion.

"Supporting abortion rights is a vital part of our commitment to ensuring equality for all workers. AFL-CIO de Nevada anuncia apoyo a la enmienda para proteger el derecho al aborto

Discussion focused on Nevada’s near-last ranking for women’s health outcomes and the critical importance of safeguarding access to reproductive healthcare, including abortion care 

Las Vegas, NV – As abortion bans continue to threaten access to reproductive health services and health outcomes for women, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood Action Fund Alexis McGill Johnson joined patients, medical providers, and Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom advocates for a round table discussion in Las Vegas focused on the need to pass the abortion petition initiative.

A report released last week shows Nevada ranked 48th in the country for health care access, quality, and health outcomes for women. Specifically, the report ranks Nevada 39 out of 51 for health and reproductive care outcomes; 49 out of 51 for coverage, access, and affordability; and 51 out of 51 for health care quality and prevention. 

Alexis McGill Johnson, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, detailed the threats to abortion rights nationally and the need to take action in Nevada to ensure that Nevadans’ reproductive healthcare remains protected, including the right to abortion:

“Since Roe v. Wade was overturned, we have seen continued and unrelenting attacks on abortion rights. These bans have led to dangerous and life-threatening consequences for women: a 10-year-old girl from Ohio who was raped had to travel to Indiana to get the abortion she needed, and in Texas, one woman who miscarried lost liters of blood and had to go on a breathing machine before doctors could legally help her. We cannot let these tragic stories continue. It is critical that Nevadans be proactive in protecting the right to abortion in this state for good.”

Dr. Joseph Adashek, maternal-fetal medicine specialist in Las Vegas, emphasized that decisions about abortions need to remain between doctors and their patients:

“As a physician that specializes in high-risk pregnancies, I’ve sat with my patients and their families to make difficult decisions about the future of their pregnancies. Politicians are never more qualified than doctors to make these decisions. That’s why it’s so critical that Nevada voters pass the abortion ballot initiative to protect abortion rights for Nevadans, once and for all. Nevadans deserve access to quality healthcare in all its forms.”

“Desde que se revocó Roe v. Wade, hemos sido testigos de los implacables y continuos ataques a los derechos humanos. “Como médico especialista en embarazos de riesgo, he tenido conversaciones con pacientes y su familias donde han tenido que tomar decisiones difíciles sobre el futuro de sus embarazos. Los políticos no están más calificados que doctores para tomar estas decisiones. Por eso es muy importante que los votantes en Nevada aprueben la iniciativa para proteger el derecho al aborto en la constitucion. Los nevadenses merecen tener acceso a salud médica de calidad, en todas sus formas.”

Abortion bans continue to threaten access to reproductive health services and health outcomes for women

Reno, NV –  A new report shows Nevada ranked 48th in the country for health care access, quality, and health outcomes for women. Specifically, the report ranks Nevada 39 out of 51 for health and reproductive care outcomes; 49 out of 51 for coverage, access, and affordability; and 51 out of 51 for health care quality and prevention. 

The overturning of Roe v. Wade has significantly altered the reproductive healthcare landscape and has directly impacted health outcomes, the report cites. At a time when the country is seeing unprecedented attacks on reproductive healthcare, including abortion, contraception, and IVF, we must double down on safeguarding protections for that reproductive healthcare, including abortion.

Dr. Harpreet Tsui, Nevada State Lead for the Committee to Protect Health Care and Henderson internist,

“The alarming findings from this report reinforce physicians’ commitment to advocating for robust reproductive health care reforms and protections. These outcomes further underscore the urgent need to pass the Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom petition initiative to enshrine abortion rights in our state constitution. Nevada patients deserve access to quality reproductive health care in all its forms, including abortion, and this initiative will help improve and protect access for generations to come.”

Defensores de Derechos Reproductivos y Doctores Reaccionan a Reporte que Califica a Nevada en los Últimos Lugares en Atención Médica a la Mujer; Enfatizando la Necesidad de Aprobar la Protección del Aborto  

Las prohibiciones para acceder a un aborto siguen poniendo en peligro el acceso a la salud reproductiva y el bienestar médico de las mujeres 

Reno, NV –  Un nuevo informe publicado esta semana ubica a Nevada en el puesto 48 en el país en cuanto al acceso a la atención médica, calidad y salud reproductiva de la mujer. De manera específica, el reporte clasifica al Nevada en el puesto 39 de 51 en cuanto a el estado de la salud reproductiva; en el lugar 49 de 51 en cobertura, acceso y precios justos; así como, en la posición 51, en cuanto a la calidad de atención y prevención.

De acuerdo con el informe, la anulación de Roe v. Wade ha alterado de manera significativa el panorama de la atención reproductiva y ha generado un impacto directo en la salud de la mujer. En un momento en el que en el país se hace frente a ataques sin precedente a la salud reproductiva, como las amenazas sobre el derecho al aborto, la anticoncepción -con los intentos de control de la pastilla abortiva- y la fecundación in vitro, es momento de redoblar esfuerzos para salvaguardar la salud reproductiva y el acceso al aborto. 

Dr. Harpreet Tsui, médico internista, opinó que:

“Los resultados alarmantes de este informe refuerzan el compromiso de los médicos para exigir reformas y protecciones sólidas en la atención de la salud reproductiva. Coalition organizations prepare to knock over 1 million doors to mobilize Nevada voters to protect reproductive rights

Reno, NV – Today, Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom unveils a broad coalition of partner organizations united to mobilize voters in support of abortion rights. The coalition includes organizations representing Nevada’s Latino, Black, Indigenous, Asian and Pacific Islander, communities; reproductive rights organizations; healthcare advocacy organizations; and many more that reflect Nevada’s diverse communities and interests.

On June 28th, the Nevada Secretary of State officially certified a constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights for the November 2024 ballot. Nevadans strongly believe abortion should be legal. The coalition’s partner organizations plan to contact over one million voters across Nevada to ensure that voters who believe decisions about abortion should stay between women and their doctors turn out to make their voices heard this fall. 

“Women, including Latinas, are bringing Nevada back and want our government to provide us with more opportunities, freedoms and rights, not strip them away," said Melissa Morales, President and Founder of Somos Votantes and Somos PAC. "While incredibly dangerous state abortion bans continue to be put in place by anti-abortion politicians across the country, it is crucial we protect Nevadans' rights. Reno, NV – Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom anuncio la coalición de organizaciones aliadas que estaran trabajando para movilizar a votantes en Nevada a favor de la iniciativa que busca resguardar el derecho al aborto. Esta coalición incluye organizaciones de la comunidad latina, afroamericana, nativos americanos, asiática e isleños del pacifio; así como organizaciones que defienden los derechos reproductivos,  de salud, y otros grupos que reflejan la diversidad de los nevadenses. 

El 28 de junio, el Secretario de Estado de Nevada dio su aprobación para que la enmienda constitucional para proteger el derecho al aborto aparezca en la boleta electoral de noviembre de 2024. Los nevadenses creen firmemente que el aborto debe ser legal y por ello las organizaciones aliadas esperan llegar a más de un millón de votantes a través de todo el estado para asegurar que la voz de quienes consideran que la decision sobre el aborto debe tomarse entre una mujer y sus médico.

After Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom submitted more than 200,000 signatures from all 17 Nevada counties, the Nevada Secretary of State certified the measure to appear on the 2024 ballot 

Reno, NV – Today, the Nevada Secretary of State officially certified a constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights for the November 2024 ballot. Last month, Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom turned in more than 200,000 voter signatures from all 17 counties in Nevada, demonstrating broad support for the amendment across the state and political spectrum. 

Nevadans strongly believe abortion should be legal. Ongoing attacks on abortion rights and reproductive health care – including IVF and contraception – nationally and in states across the country underscores the urgency of passing permanent state constitutional protections to keep politicians out of Nevadans’ personal medical decisions. 

Lindsey Harmon, President of Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom, issued the following statement:

“Today, the Nevada Secretary of State certified that Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom’s constitutional amendment protecting abortion rights will appear on the ballot this November. The support this initiative has received from Nevadans throughout the signature collection process shows what we’ve known to be true: Nevadans believe that healthcare decisions about abortion are best left to women, their doctors, and those they love and trust – not politicians. 

Nevadans strongly believe that abortion should be legal. But at every turn, anti-abortion activists have attempted to prevent Nevadans from making their voices heard with pointless lawsuits and misinformation. 

Today, we are thrilled that Nevadans will be able to make their voices heard and stand up for the right to make their own healthcare decisions in the face of government interference. In an election year with critical implications for abortion and reproductive health care, our campaign, coalition partners, and supporters will be out in communities across the state, talking to  neighbors, family, and friends about turning out to vote in support of reproductive rights this fall.”

Los ataques constantes a nivel nacional y en los estados sobre el derecho al aborto y a la atención reproductiva -incluyendo la Fecundación in Vitro y anticoncepción- demuestran la importancia de aprobar protecciones constitucionales permanentes para que políticos no puedan influir en decisiones personales de cuidado médico.

Reno, NV — On the two year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision that overturned 50 years of federal constitutional protections for abortion rights, Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom, in conjunction with the Committee to Protect Health Care, released a list of more than 150 Nevada medical professionals who have signed onto a letter endorsing the ballot initiative aimed at codifying protections for abortion in the Nevada state constitution.

Today in Reno, two Nevada physicians shared the devastating consequences to patients since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and the dire implications for patients’ health and well-being.

Dr. Toby Frescholtz, an OB-GYN in Reno, said the following:

“Anti-abortion politicians and activists will continue to attack our rights, even though it’s extremely unpopular. In fact, four in five Americans believe that questions of reproductive rights should be left to a patient and their doctor, not the government. Politicians across the country will continue to try to control women’s personal decisions not just on abortion but on reproductive health and freedom as a whole… As we look toward another election with extreme anti-abortion candidates running at all levels of government, we must take matters into our own hands. We need to ensure that Nevadans’ health, values, and rights are protected, no matter who is in charge. Doctors like us wholeheartedly support the ballot initiative to enshrine abortion rights into the Nevada constitution. We encourage our fellow Nevadans to do the same.”

Dr. Philip Malinas, psychiatrist in Reno, said the following:

“The two years since the Dobbs decision have brought chaos, pain, and suffering for patients across the country. We’ve heard tragic stories of Idaho women being denied care. One such woman, Rebecca Vincen-Brown, had been trying for almost a year to conceive another child. When she finally did, she learned that the pregnancy had an almost certainly fatal chromosomal abnormality. The pregnancy would also put Rebecca at risk of preeclampsia or hemorrhaging. Although these conditions could threaten her life, Rebecca was unable to get abortion care because of Idaho’s ban. She was forced to travel to Portland, Oregon, and while awaiting the care she needed, was forced to deliver her stillborn baby in a hotel room… This shouldn’t be happening in the United States.”

Linda Massie, a supporter and volunteer, shared her abortion story and why she’s fighting to preserve reproductive rights:

“Today, I cannot believe that I have to share my story. I never imagined myself having to talk about my abortion from over 50 years ago, but when I think about what is happening around the country because of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, I am afraid… I’ve decided to share my story publicly for the first time today because I’m shocked and angry that after 50 years of protections for abortion when women could make these deeply personal decisions with their doctors, we’re now back in a time when women’s lives are being put at risk just like mine was. I’m supporting the crucial effort to protect abortion rights in the Nevada state constitution so that no women has to experience what I went through.”

Médicos expertos afirman que las decisiones de salud deben mantenerse 

entre médicos y pacientes, sin intervención de políticos 

Reno, NV — A dos años de la decisión de la Corte Suprema del caso Dobbs que anuló Roe v. Wade, el cual protegió el derecho al aborto legal a nivel federal por 50 años, la coalición Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom y el Committee to Protect Health Care, dieron a conocer una carta firmada por más de 150 proveedores de salud de Nevada para respaldar la propuesta electoral de codificar las protecciones del aborto en la Constitución del estado.

Hoy en Reno, dos médicos compartieron las consecuencias devastadoras que han enfrentado los pacientes desde que se anuló el caso Roe v. Wade y el terrible impacto para la salud y el bienestar de las personas

Dr. Toby Frescholtz, ginecólog obstreta en Reno, expresó:

“Los políticos y activistas antiaborto continuarán atacando nuestros derechos, a pesar de que nuestra comunidad apoya el acceso al aborto. Incluso, cuatro de cada cinco estadounidenses consideran que las decisiones sobre los derechos reproductivos deberían solucionarse entre médicos y pacientes, y no a través del gobierno. Políticos de todo el país intentarán seguir controlando las decisiones de las mujeres, no sólo sobre el aborto, sino también sobre su salud y su libertad reproductiva…Frente a nosotros vemos a candidatos radicales que se pronuncian abiertamente en contra del aborto y se postulan para ocupar cargos de todos los niveles de gobierno. Debemos tomar el control y asegurarnos de proteger la salud, valores y los derechos de los nevadenses, sin importar quien esté en el poder. Médicos como nosotros apoyamos sin condiciones la propuesta electoral para codificar los derechos al aborto en la Constitución de Nevada. Por ello, hacemos un llamado a nuestros compañeros a ser aliados de esta propuesta.”

“En estos dos años que han transcurrido desde la decisión Dobbs sólo se ha generado caos, dolor y sufrimiento a pacientes de todo el país. Hemos escuchado historias trágicas de mujeres en Idaho a las que se les ha negado atención médica. Como es el caso de Rebecca Vincen-Brown que llevaba más de un año tratando de concebir otro hijo y cuando finalmente lo hizo se enteró que su embarazo tenía una falla cromosómica, había una alta probabilidad de que podría ser mortal y con el riesgo de sufrir preeclampsia o hemorragia. A pesar de todas estas advertencias que ponían en riesgo su vida, Rebecca no pudo obtener cuidado médico debido a que la atención médica está prohibida en Idaho. Tuvo que viajar a Portland, Oregon, y mientras esperaba recibir atención médica, se vio forzada a dar a luz a su bebé muerto en una habitación de hotel...Estos casos no deberían de estar sucediendo en Estados Unidos.” 

Linda Massie, activista y voluntaria, compartió su historia sobre el aborto y explicó por qué lucha para preservar los derechos reproductivos:

“No puedo creer que hoy esté compartiendo mi historia. Nunca me imaginé tener que hablar sobre mi caso que sucedió hace más de 50 años, pero cuando veo todo lo que está sucediendo en todo el país debido a la anulación de Roe v. Wade es necesario que lo haga…he decidido compartir públicamente mi experiencia personal porque estoy enojada porque nos quitarnos el derecho al acceso al aborto después de 50 años, una decisión muy personal que sólo deberia quedar en una mujer y sus doctores. Es inimaginable pensar que estamos regresando a una época donde se pone en riesgo la vida de las mujeres, como fue mi caso. Estoy apoyando este esfuerzo que es crucial para proteger el derecho al aborto en la Constitución de Nevada para que ninguna mujer tenga que vivir la misma experiencia traumática por la que yo pasé.”

Reno, NV – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court released an opinion in a case challenging the availability of mifepristone, a safe and effective drug used in medication abortions. Medication abortions make up more than half of abortions in the U.S., and mifepristone has been used by millions of patients for more than two decades. The Court unanimously rejected the challenge on procedural grounds.

Though today’s ruling ensures that mifepristone remains legal and available for the time being, the drug is still banned for patients in states where medication abortion is illegal and is still considered a “controlled substance” in Louisiana. Anti-abortion advocates will likely bring more legal challenges in the future.

The threat to abortion rights nationwide remains immediate and dire. Since Roe v. Wade was overturned, state abortion bans have led to countless horror stories: A 10-year-old girl from Ohio who was raped had to travel to Indiana to get the abortion she needed; in Texas, one woman who miscarried, lost liters of blood and had to go on a breathing machine before doctors could legally help her; and in Florida, a woman whose water broke when she was 16 weeks pregnant could not legally receive an abortion and ended up delivering a stillborn baby in the bathroom of a hair salon.

These stories drive the urgency with which the Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom coalition is fighting to permanently protect Nevadans’ right to abortion.

“Today’s ruling reinforces what the FDA has known for over 20 years – that mifepristone is a safe and effective medication, and that access to the drug should remain legal. Reno, NV – Hoy la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos dio a conocer su opinión en el caso que determina el acceso a la mifepristona, un medicamento que permite un aborto seguro y efectivo. La Corte rechazó unánimemente la impugnación por motivos de procedimiento. Los abortos con medicamentos representan más de la mitad de los abortos en Estados Unidos y millones de pacientes han utilizado la mifepristona durante más de dos décadas.

Sin embargo, aunque el fallo de hoy garantiza que la mifepristona siga siendo legal y que esté disponible por ahora, la píldora todavía está prohibida para pacientes en estados donde el aborto con medicamentos es ilegal y es considera una “sustancia controlada” en Luisiana. Las Vegas, NV – Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case that will determine the future of EMTALA, a federal law that guarantees that, in an emergency, patients receive the lifesaving care they need, including abortion care. Idaho v. United States and Moyle v. United States is the second case related to abortion coming before the Supreme Court since the Dobbs decision, and could have catastrophic impacts on women and patients across the country. 

The impacts of striking down EMTALA, the key to protecting life-saving abortion care, will be dire. Being denied care has resulted in, and will continue to result in, putting women and patients in life-threatening situations. A hospital could refuse to treat a pregnant patient in a medical emergency, like their water breaking dangerously early or an uncontrollable hemorrhage. 

Dr. Christine Miyake, an emergency medicine physician, said: 

“I have seen several different cases where the woman would have died had they not received an emergency abortion. Women who are experiencing an ectopic pregnancy that has ruptured are at high risk of hemorrhaging and death. My patient was hemorrhaging so severely that we had to provide multiple transfusions just to be able to get her stable enough to go to the operating room. Other cases where medical abortion is necessary is a case where I saw a patient who ruptured her membranes early and developed a severe uterine infection and she was dying from the infection. If they were not able to provide that abortion, she surely would have died from the infection.”

Not only is the threat to protections for lifesaving care dangerous, anti-abortion extremists behind this challenge are deeply out of step with voters: according to a 2023 Wall Street Journal poll, 9 in 10 Americans support abortion access when a woman’s health is seriously endangered by the pregnancy. Extremists would rather put a woman’s life at risk than grant them access to life-saving medical care. 

Laura Campbell, Director of Actions for Nevada NOW, shared her experience of receiving lifesaving care while pregnant: 

“Throughout this experience, I was taken care of by my doctors, and I am grateful for that… But not everyone has that. We are hearing stories of women miscarrying in emergency rooms, of pregnant women being turned away from hospitals. That could easily have been me. Nobody should be denied healthcare in a medical emergency. That is what’s at stake in the case before the Supreme Court today. The law being argued today is key to protecting life-saving abortion care – the very same care I received.”

This case is part of a broader strategy to ban abortion and other reproductive health care altogether. Without the constitutional protection of Roe v. Wade, attacks like this one are a reminder of the urgency of our fight to enshrine abortion access as a constitutional right for Nevadans.

Reno, NV — Today, the Nevada Supreme Court ruled in favor of Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom, concluding that petition language filed in September 2023 to enshrine the right to reproductive freedom into the state constitution meets Nevada’s legal requirements for a ballot measure. Specifically, the court ruled that the petition does not violate the state’s single-subject rule and the petition does not create an unfunded mandate on the state. 

Today’s ruling is a major blow to extreme anti-abortion activists who have sought to keep Nevadans from being able to vote on the future of abortion access in the state.

While legal proceedings have been underway, Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom have gathered more than 160,000 signatures in support of a second version of the initiative to codify abortion protections in the state constitution. The campaign intends to submit the second petition to the Nevada Secretary of State and is well ahead of schedule to qualify it for the 2024 ballot.

Reno, NV — Today, Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom announced that the campaign to codify abortion protections in the state’s constitution has collected more than 110,000 signatures over the past six weeks. This latest signature collection milestone represents more than 50% of the campaign’s total signature goal and demonstrates the campaign is on track to turn in sufficient valid signatures by the June 26th qualification deadline. 

In order to qualify for the 2024 ballot, the campaign must submit a minimum of 102,362 valid voter signatures, including at least 25,591 from each of the state’s four congressional districts. The campaign has been actively collecting signatures from all four congressional districts and from reproductive rights supporters across the political spectrum.

Reno, NV — Today, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the case of Food and Drug Administration v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine. Justices are reviewing a ruling by the Fifth Circuit federal appeals court that would dramatically restrict (but not eliminate altogether) access to mifepristone, a safe and effective drug used in medication abortions. 

Medication abortions make up more than half of abortions in the U.S., and mifepristone has been used by millions of patients for more than two decades. Keeping mifepristone available is essential to protecting access to abortion for people across the country. If the Supreme Court upholds the Fifth Circuit’s decision, abortion access will be drastically restricted nationwide, even in states like Nevada where abortion is currently legal. 

This attack on a safe and effective medication that has been approved by the FDA for decades is just the latest from anti-abortion extremists dedicated to banning abortion nationwide and denying people the freedom to make their own health care decisions.

“The Supreme Court’s hearing of the mifepristone case, one of two this session that could have major implications for abortion access nationwide, including in states like Nevada, is yet another proofpoint of how urgent the effort to codify abortion into the Nevada constitution is. Reno, NV — Today, Carson City District Court Judge James Russell ruled against radical anti-abortion activists and their latest attempt to prevent a proposed reproductive rights constitutional amendment from appearing on Nevada’s 2024 general election ballot. Today’s ruling found that the petition filed by Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom on December 6, 2023 meets statutory requirements and can move forward for signature gathering. An initial version of the petition filed last September is under review by the Nevada Supreme Court.
